The Northwest Research Institute of Chemical Industry(NWRICI), a key research institute formerly under Ministry of Chemical Industry,has a perfect R & D system consisting of Institute of Coal Gasification,Institute of Catalysis, Institute of Fine Chemicals, Institute of Environmental Protection, Institute of Agrochemistry, Design Institute, Analytical & Testing Center and Information Center, with an R & D team of over forty years of experience and a research and commercialization system covering different phases, from laboratory study, bench-scale experiment, pilot test, test production to marketing and commercialization.
R & D aspects of NWRICI include coal chemistry, catalysis /purification, fine chemicals, advanced materials, environmental protection and agrochemistry. NWRICI is the undertaker of over 1000 R & D tasks from state, ministries, provinces and enterprises, with over 600 technological achievements and over 100 prizes from national-, ministrial- and provincial-level. NWRICI is the sponsor of Industrial Catalysis, one of the state core science and technological periodicals, sponsor of National Information Station of Industrial Catalysis, National Information Station of Medicinal Polymer Materials, and sponsor of Shaanxi Provincial Engineering & Research Center for Coal Chemistry.
In the aspect of coal gasification, NWRICI is the undertaker of National Sixth Five-Year Key Technologies R & D Program, National Seventh Five-Year Key Technologies R & D Program, National Eighth Five-Year Key Technologies R & D Program, National Ninth Five-Year Key Technologies R & D Program, National Tenth Five-Year Hi-tech R & D Program (863 Program), National Eleventh Five-Year Hi-tech R & D Program (863 Program) and Technological Development Program for State Key Research Institutes of Ministry of Science and Technology, developer of over twenty coal gasification and related technologies.
Multi-Component Slurry Gasification (MCSG) Technology, patented technology developed upon basis of decades of R & D efforts, has been a leading first-choice and proven technology for large-scale coal-based chemical plants (i. g., ammonia, methanol and CTL plants), and there have been over thirty large-scale commercial plants in operation or under construction in different locations in China.
Process Stream Purification
In the aspect of process stream purification, NWRICI is the undertaker of National Eighth Five-Year Key Technologies R & D Program, National Ninth Five-Year Key Technologies R & D Program, Technological Development Program for State Key Research Institutes of Ministry of Science and Technology and Key R & D Program of Ministry of Chemical Industry. NWRICI is an institute with the longest history of researches in process stream purification and has been leading this aspect for decades. The achievements in this aspects include hydroconversion, desulfurization , dechlorination , removal of arsenic, hydrogen, oxygen, fluoride, olefins and? acetylene from gaseous and liquid stream in commercial plants.
C1 Chemistry Process and Synthesis Catalysts
R & D of NWRICI in C1 Chemistry Process and Synthesis Catalysts started in 1980s and achievements have been made in CO shift, methanation, methanol synthesis, DME synthesis and acetic acid synthesis catalysts, among which CO shift and methanol synthesis catalysts have been put into commercial use.
Fine Chemicals and Advanced Materials
R & D of NWRICI in fine chemicals and advanced materials started in 1990s and is under taker of Technological Development Program for State Key Research Institutes of Ministry of Science and Technology and Key R & D Program of Shaanxi Province. Commercial plants supported by the R & D achievements were installed and in operation with two product chains, i., e., fine chemicals represented by alkyl phenol and advanced materials represented by bismalaimide(BMI).
In the aspect of Environmental Protection, NWRICI is the undertaker of Public Wealth Program for State Key Research Institutes of Ministry of Science and Technology and Program of Innovation Fund for Technology Based Firms of Ministry of Science and Technology. The achievements include the technology for removal of dioxin from the flue gas of municipal waste incinerators and treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
NWRICI has an R & D history of over forty years in the aspect of agrochemistry and is the undertakers of variety of R & D programs from ministrial- and provincial-level. An agrochemicals sector was established based upon these achievements.
